Movement For Gloom is a comedy series charting the trials and tribulations of an uninspiring and dysfunctional collective of people with mediocre expectations, as they attempt to get elected to high office. People are losing their jobs and the world’s going down the gutter; with this current climate, the Movement for Gloom offers the disaffected electorate a fresh alternative.

The self appointed leader, Daniel tries every trick in the political handbook to get elected despite being surrounded by a crack team of idiots, barely qualified to organise their own lives let alone a political movement. Sam, the political strategist gets his ideas from board games, Chris the press secretary initially joined the party for a free sharpie and a badge (of which he still hasn’t received), the chief campaigns officer Vicky has been known to intimidate the opposition by bounding and gagging them, and Victor the speechwriter lets his frustrations with his failed relationship out in Daniel’s speeches. A chief of staff, Hamah a psychic Judo expert and Doug a pollster who runs an organisation ‘Baking Polls’ which bakes bread and does a bit of polling in his spare time, eventually joins them. With these talents on board (such as they are) Daniel seeks to campaign and spread their message across the UK, despite not being clear about what the message is.

However, there are a few obstacles along the way. Rob Talk is a needlessly aggressive news reporter with a massive ego who refers to himself in the third person and carries a microphone everywhere he goes (speculation is out to whether it is actually connected to anything). His crusade against the Movement For Gloom intensifies when the shadiest man in British politics escapes from prison and takes an interest in the fledging party. The nefarious cross benching political mastermind, that successive governments branded dangerous, sees a kindred spirit in the disorganised Gloomers and decides to bankroll the party, revealing his intentions in a needlessly dramatic fashion.

With a suspicious Rob constantly on their tales, the Gloomers tentatively take Monty up on his offer and are shocked to discover they are soon propelled into the political limelight after winning at the local elections. Before Lord Monty showed up, the Movement For Gloom were disorganized, feckless and incompetent. But now, they are disorganized, feckless and incompetent, but with lots of money and power. Welcome to the world of politics, Movement For Gloom.

Movement For Gloom was conceived as most good ideas are, from boredom and frustration and as a reflection of the current climate. It’s aim is not to delve too deeply into politics or even the depths of unhappiness, but to satirise the current situation and focus on a dysfunctional group of people who get themselves into ridiculous escapades. The ensemble is a showcasing of new British talent; actors, comedians, writers and filmmakers, all of who have workshopped the episodes after they have been written to get the best out of each sketch. The show’s style is satirical, anarchic, and at times surreal; evolving from a sketch based format to something more akin to a conventional series, without losing any of the sketch based fun. It draws from a wide set of influences such as the Thick of It, The West Wing, The Office and Arrested Development. Originally intended as a single camera documentary crew, or online campaign vlogs, episodes have also included a third person camera setup as per a conventional series allowing the comedy to be presented in different ways.
